A candidate’s US student visa authorizes them to work on-campus up to 20 hours per week when school is in session and full-time during school break days (up to 40 hours per week).

On-campus employment is work that’s done on campus or at an off-campus location affiliated with the university. That could mean working in a university bookstore, cafe, or other establishments where students can help.

International students in the U.S. with valid F1 immigration status are authorized to work off-campus in Optional Practical Training (OPT) status both during and after finishing their degree. All OPT employment requires prior permission from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) and the school’s International Student Office. Candidates can apply for OPT after enrolment for at least nine months, cannot commence work until obtaining an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) from USCIS, and have been enrolled for at least a year. A candidate does not need a job offer to apply for an OPT EAD, and OPT employment can happen anywhere in the U.S.
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is an off-campus employment option for F1 students when practical training is an essential part of the established curriculum or academic program. CPT employment is an “alternative work/study, internship, cooperative education, or any other type of mandated internship or practicum offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the academy.” For qualifying, the work experience must be a condition for your degree or academic credit. And yes, you can get remunerated for CPT employment. Prior authorization by your school’s International Student Office and notification to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) are needed. Regardless of whether you are permitted for full or part-time on CPT, there is no limit to how long you can work. Yet, if you work full-time on CPT for 12 months or more, you are not qualified for OPT.

The SEVP-approved school will give you a Form I-20. After receiving the Form I-20 and registering in SEVIS, one may apply at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate for a student (F or M) visa. The candidate must present the Form I-20 to the consular officer when attending the visa interview.

1) Complete the online visa application.
2) Print the application form confirmation page to bring to the interview
3) Candidate has to upload their photo while completing the online Form DS-160.
4) Schedule an Interview
